Ways to Teach & Spiral Odd and Even Numbers
Every morning we use to sing Hello, Hi There from Shari Sloane's School is Cool album as part of our morning calendar. When she says "find a partner near you," I stop the music and let them pair up. Below is the YouTube video, let me know if you can't see it, or if the video no longer works. {fernleysmith@gmail.com}
BUT THEN... when we have some absent, on a day when we have an ODD number of students, we stop and I will be that person's partner. We quickly discuss that ONE was left over, etc.
After a few days of a ODD number of students they become wise to my ways and EVERYONE wants to be the one left over so they can be my partner.
So, to mix it up, I then teach them that one group will have three students, one group will have an ODD number and we can roll on for the rest of the year. It really clicked with my previous Kinders, and by exposing them to ODD and EVEN every.single.day, HOPEFULLY, they will be ready to roll in second grade for your review.
Another Way to Teach & Spiral Odd and Even Numbers
Another quick and easy way to introduce and even review odd and even is to let everyone find a partner. Even students = even groups.... Odd number of students = one left over. Stress that with an odd number there will always be ONE LEFT OVER.
Some none examples to review, if you have two students, you have a group of two, so you are still at an even number. If you have three students, you have ONE MORE group of only ONE student, while it is a "group" that one student left over is what makes it an ODD number overall.

This is one of my favorite tips when you start using Color By Code and Color By Number Printables with your students. Have them color just a small part of the box and when done, a helper, parent volunteer, a paraprofessional or you can give it a quick once over to make sure it is correct and ready to be colored. For example, in this picture, the student colors just the tens or the ones according to the color by code key.

Here's a little freebie for you too!
I've created a center game for my second grade teacher friends for use in
your classroom math center during your math small group time! Continue
reading for a lesson idea about how to teach, review and spiral odd and even
numbers.
Teach & Spiral Odd and Even Numbers
Most of you start the year reviewing odd and even numbers. Especially if
your district uses Go Math, Odd and Even Numbers are the first lesson in
chapter one. In kindergarten I review odd and even numbers every.single.day!
While we are learning our numbers, we are also learning to take them apart,
to decompose them. Math standards state that kindergartners need
to show how any number 1-10 can be created using a variety of addends.
This daily calendar activity is perfect.
Every day during calendar I place one more red "cookie" in the tens frame
on the board to represent the number of SCHOOL DAYS we've been in school
that month. Then we chant while I point to the cookies, "One cookie for Mrs.
Smith, one cookie for me." Discussing how we have an even number of cookies
for the party or one left over!
I like to also expand this lesson daily for my higher level students, to
expose them to fractions. On the odd days, the cookie left over can be split
into two halves, two parts, and we are all happy because in our little party
of two people, life is fair and equal again.
This is what it looks like as we pass the tenth day of school in a
month....
Which is perfect because we also have to learn to decompose numbers into
their tens and ones!
As the school year rolls on, to keep this fun and interesting, I teach my
helpers to stand at the board and point, some months the helper will say, "A
cookie for Mrs. Smith, a cookie for me." Other months they can pick a friend
and say, "A cookie for Suzie, a cookie for me." Then they know to finish up the lesson asking the class, is it an odd
number or even number. It's adorable y'all! It seriously doesn't get old and they love it.

Next Up is Understanding Place Value, 1.3 in Go Math, but also usually at the beginning of all second grade math series. I have lots to help reinforce this skill for your boys and girls too, please read on..
Why do we teach understanding place value?
Our students need to understand what the two digits of a number mean in terms
of ones and tens. They also need to be able to explain their thinking of how they came up
with answers to questions about larger and smaller numbers.
An Introductory Lesson to Place Value of Two Digit Numbers
Give your students whiteboards or scrap paper. Write 36 and 63 on the board or overhead camera. Ask your students to explain to a partner the difference in these two numbers. Quote, "Since they have the same digits aren't they the same?"
You can use Base Ten Blocks and when your students are ready, you can start using a quick draw method of DOTS and STICKS. The students can draw what 36 and 63 might look like.
After teaching third grade Math for years, I would stress to my students, during the state standardized tests, you can't pull out Base Ten Blocks, Counters, Snap Cubes, etc.... but with the allowable scrap paper, you can recreate these items quickly if you need help to work out a problem. I love DOTS and STICKS, it takes no time at all to draw.
Come back together and discuss the difference. If you've followed my blog for awhile, you know that I love to use money to relate to real world math... 7 and 8 year olds just love money! Ask your class what would they rather have, $36 or $63? Follow up by discussing that place value MATTERS!
Give your students time to work and discuss more examples.
54 and 45 ~ 92 and 29 ~ 16 and 61
If time and to extend your lesson, allow them to create pairs for each other to work out.
This lesson is a great review for a transition into greater than or less than later in the year.
When your done with your lessons, I have some great resources for small group time, centers, seat work or as a spiral review when you move to chapter two.
FIVE printables that are made to be an additional resource for any math
series. Use them for your math center, RTI pull out, seat work, small
group lessons, or homework. FIVE answer keys are also included.
Your students will adore these Color By Numbers worksheets while
learning and reviewing important skills at the same time! You will love
the no prep, print and go ease of these printables. As always, answer
keys are included. Color By Number Second Grade Go Math Lesson 1.3
