Balancing concrete (manipulatives) & abstract thinking skills (pencil and paper) can be quite difficult in the elementary classroom. Not everyone is at the same stage, which is why math centers and teacher small groups lessons are the best type of math instruction. However, what is "terrific" in this world and what you can ACTUALLY fit into your schedule are two different things! :)
I have a set of Equal Groups Task Cards at TpT that have 36 different task cards, the first 18 ask the students to draw the equal groups and the last 18 ask them to count the equal groups and include a final answer.

Lesson Idea for Teaching the Associative Property of Multiplication: Using white boards and five students, have them stand at the board. Give three students one number each. For example, 5 3 and 2. Then have one student be opening parenthesis and the last student be the closing parenthesis. Have an "audience" classmate arrange them, with guidance if needed, to organize the students into a problem. (3 x 2) x 5= then have them select a student to answer the parenthesis part first and stand with their white board saying 6. Have a new student solve the last step of the problem, 6 x 5= 30.
Next, involve another student to rearrange the problem and parenthesis. Continue to call students up to the front with their whiteboards until it has been solved each time. After three to four rearrangements, you can then discuss with everyone that Ah-ha moment that no mater what, it is always 30.
The task cards allow you to pull one, put it on the over head and not worry about it being too difficult for your third graders to solve.
Extend the Lesson:
To continue with the skill on a higher level, use the task cards to find the unknown factor. For example...(4 x __) x 2=40.
These Associative Property of Multiplication Task Cards also include the answer keys, which you can laminate and leave at the center to allow it to be student led, self-checking sheets. In small group lessons you can give each student three to four cards and they can help each other and review the Associative Property of Multiplication skill by checking the answers that their partner or neighbor answered, keeping everyone involved! Common Core State Standards 3.OA.B.5
Apply properties of operations as strategies to multiply and divide. Examples: If 6 × 4 = 24 is known, then 4 × 6 = 24 is also known. (Commutative property of multiplication.) 3 × 5 × 2 can be found by 3 × 5 = 15, then 15 × 2 = 30, or by 5 × 2 = 10, then 3 × 10 = 30. (Associative property of multiplication.) Knowing that 8 × 5 = 40 and 8 × 2 = 16, one can find 8 × 7 as 8 × (5 + 2) = (8 × 5) + (8 × 2) = 40 + 16 = 56. (Distributive property.)
