One of my very favorite strategies requires practice, but once firmly rooted in your student's tool box of mental math tricks, it can be a very powerful skill. Breaking Apart Addends as Tens and Ones!
Breaking their two digit by two digit addition problems into tens and one really solidifies the fact that they are adding 50 or 5 tens to 10 or 1 ten. Then adding the leftover ones is simple basic facts of nothing higher than 9+9. This center game, which I like to create using file folders, is perfect for a math center spiral review.
This math resource includes:
* Adorable Cover for the center
* Answer Key / Student Self-Checking Sheet
Terrific for an Emergency Sub Tub, Math Centers, Small Group Work, Remediation RTI or Homework!
