This is one of my favorite tips.
At the start of the year I like to use these as a directed lesson. I tell them the exact crayons they will need, then we put the rest away. As I read each "code" they use the correct color crayon to mark it. For example met = green, so we color these entire line green. Then we find the word met in the page and mark green over the word. Later during reading rotations they can color it in and pull out the rest of the crayons and color the blank spaces their choice. You can also use a gradual release with this, letting them work in pairs, then independently, but having someone check it before they finish, etc.
