This is a four foot by three foot latch hook rug my teen did one summer when she was 11 or 12. The picture doesn't make it look that big, but trust me, it is. Why do I mention why it is so big? Because when she finished it the wonderful hubby made the frame for her and those dolphins have moved, moved, moved with us ever since. First it was to match her blue and brown themed room, then after one of our Navy moves, it was relocated to her bathroom for a blue theme, then the next move it was changed over to her brother's bathroom. This last move out of the clear blue, it was no longer wanted, no longer "cool" and was headed for the trash! As she's walking out the door with it she says, "Oh, want this?"
I ask you, how does a Mom say, No???
All I could think was, "Hmmmmm, you worked all summer on that, we paid money to make a frame for you, we had to get rid of things to stay under the weight limit for our moves to keep that thing, but sure, I hate all your creative hard work, lets just throw it away!"
Nope, I said, I love it, of course I want it!
Now I am glad that I did. Many of my students don't do arts and crafts and many of them have never seen anything like this. The first thing they do is rub their hands all over those poor dolphins! They love how deep it goes and how thick it feels.
Since they love it so much, I decided to stick it up and go with the beach theme.
I ♥love Florida, I ♥love the water, the ocean, the breeze {the sand not so much!} so going with a beach theme was not too painful! The blues and blacks from the dolphins is what I used for the entire room.
So all this got me thinking, how did you pick your theme? Leave a message, leave a link, let the rest of us see a pretty picture of your theme, your room or even your future ideas from Pinterest!
I chose a travel theme a long time ago, during a Michigan road trip, actually, and that's when I named my classroom "Jasztalville". I have a city sign as well- and lots of postcards posted around the room as well as three vintage license plates. I am also a space enthusiast, so last year, I incorporated "Jasztalville Space Academy", which will continue into this coming year. I love how the room was turquoise and black for the most part last year. - Victoria

Our Reading committee chooses a school wide theme that varies from year to year. I personally enjoy changing up every year but this year they chose Red, White & Blue. As easy as this sounds, I have had a difficult time gathering my thoughts and plans for my room.
ReplyDeleteI love the dolphin rug, I have completed a few latch-hook projects in my life time.....can you say dated?
Love the post and your blog.

I like the Red, White and Blue idea 'cause I could make it work for CHEAP! Big USA letters, maybe a b'board with All The Way With the USA! Then put their names on stars, cheap, cheap, cheap, but still nice! My middle name should have been Cheap! :) Thanks for the comment! I am your newest follower!

I LOVE anything to do with gingerbread...So there is my theme! I will forever be known as "The Gingerbread Teacher". One question...does the fire marshal visit your school? I am in FL, too, and we would NEVER be able to have what you have in your classroom. Consider yourself lucky :)
ReplyDeleteI love the gingerbread theme. The pictures that I pulled from Pinterest for FUTURE ideas are probably the ones you are referring to about the fire marshal. All that straw grass? My luck I'll buy it all and then he will make me take it all down!

Last year I did "welcome to the jungle". For my callback I would say "this class is bananas" and the students would reply with "b-a-n-a-n-a-s". My colors were Brown and yellow and the class worked together to earn banana split parties.
ReplyDeleteI love this idea! I also love your QTIP idea!!
